Österreichische Ludwigstiftung für Kunst und Wissenschaft (Austrian Ludwig Foundation for Art and Science)

Objectives

The purpose of the Foundation is to propose and realize projects in the field of the fine arts in Austria and in this way to encourage new developments at the same time. This includes, above all, "the maintenance, care, administration, and presentation of the paintings and sculptures available at the time of the Deed of Foundation as foundation assets; the purchasing of other objects to supplement the foundation assets in an appropriate manner", and the promotion of artistic activities in the broadest sense. The Foundation Charter provides that it is intended to give "vivid and sustainable impulses" to cultural life in Austria. "The Foundation is intended to contribute to a new concept of the depiction of the modern age in the Austrian Federal Collections."

Accordingly, prestigious art purchases have been made since the Foundation was founded, inter alia from the areas of abstract and classical expressionism, Arte Povera, Fluxus, photorealism, concept art and video art, minimal art, Nouveau Réalisme, Pop Art, and Viennese Actionism.

The Foundation's predominant aim is to purchase international works of art of the highest quality, which will then be made available to Austrian federal museums as permanent loans; such purchases should be both in line with the Foundation's intention and enhance the collection's inventory. In view of its close historical links with the Museum of Modern Art Ludwig Foundation Vienna and a resolution passed by the Board of Trustees in 2003, the Austrian Ludwig Foundation primarily supports the Museum of Modern Art by way of purchases.
